Loyalty: Biblical Perspective 1

Writer's picture: Ayoola BabalolaAyoola Babalola

Loyal literally means giving or showing firm and constant support or allegiance to a person or institution.

Other words that describe loyalty includes faithfulness, commitment, dedication, constancy, devotion, steadfastness.

From the definition of Loyalty, it is clear that only a person with a strong character can be loyal. It is not cheap. It requires a lot of sacrifices to be loyal. To appreciate this it will be good to examine the opposite of Loyalty.

Opposite of Loyalty: Disloyal, faithless, disloyal, undependable, unfaithful, unreliable, untrustworthy.

You will note that the opposite of loyalty described characters that are very common in our society. Every day we unreliable people, untrustworthy people etc.

God is the definition of Loyalty. He is loyal by nature.

II Timothy 2:13 If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.

The phrase " He cannot deny himself" in the above scripture confirms that loyalty is God's nature. To change from this character is denying himself. We saw this in His word to the Israelites in Deuteronomy 7:9.

Deuteronomy 7:9 Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;

God can stick to someone for a thousand generations. That is how loyal he is. Since he choose Jacob (who later became me Isreal) from the womb he had remained loyal up till today.

Romans 9:13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.

The Loyalty of God to man His ultimate creature defies all known stories of loyalty. After man's disloyalty to God, despite the punishment, He handed to man He remained loyal to man, looking for him at every given opportunity. When He could no longer take it, He gave himself to restore the relationship with Man.

God has remained loyal to you through the years, how loyal are you to Him? How many times have you betrayed Him today?

Titus 1:16 tells us of those that are betraying God.

Titus 1:16 NLT Such people claim they know God, but they deny him by the way they live. They are detestable and disobedient, worthless for doing anything good.

Also, II Timothy 3:1-7 describes those that are betraying God. He calls them many names like verses 4-5 "Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof:"

Verse 2 " For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,"

Let us look at ourselves critically and consider every area of our disloyalty because whoever denies God, he said he would also deny.

Matthew 10:33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
