The road to the crucifixion and on the cross
Mathew 27:31-57, Mark 15:20-47, Luke 23:26-43, John 19:16-40
In this series, we have been looking at the event that occurs to Jesus Christ on the road to the crucifixion and on the cross. Today we will be considering the last key event that occurred.
7. Jesus said "it is finished"
John 19:30 When Jesus, therefore, had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
After Jesus said he thirsted and was given a vinegar he declared it is finished and gave up the ghost.
What does this statement mean?
Why did he make this statement?
It is finished as said by Jesus was a crowning statement of the passion of the Christ. It is to let the whole world know that the spiritual transaction has been concluded. The Spiritual exchange that heaven planned to take place has been concluded. What is the transaction?
1. Remission of sin. Jesus paid the ultimate price for our sin. His blood was shed for the remission of our sins. No need for the shedding of the blood of a goat or sheep.
Hebrews 10:17-18 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.
1John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
2. Justification in exchanged for condemnation. Jesus was condemned that we may be justified.
Romans 5:18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
3. Eternal life in exchanged for death. Jesus died to restore life. The transaction was to bring us into eternal life as against death. Death will have no power against us again.
I Corinthians 15:24 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
Romans 5:21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so, might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
4. Access to the holies of holies. The veil to the temple was broken after Jesus gave up the ghost. With the veil broken we can then access the holies of holies at anytime. This access was obtained by the blood of Jesus Christ. We no longer need a high priest.
Mathew 27:51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
Hebrews 10:19 Having, therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,
5. A new covenant. The old covenant was abolished, a new covenant emerged by the death of Jesus Christ. The new covenant was settled by the blood of Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 8:6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.
Hebrews 8:10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
6. Victory over the Devil. The death of Jesus on the cross secured victory for us. Victory over sin, sicknesses and diseases, every work of the devil etc.
1John 5:4-5 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
1John 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
Application
The exchange or transaction has been concluded that was why Jesus declared it is finished. So we can't add anything to what Jesus has done. Anything beyond His name, His blood, His Word and the Holy Spirit is not part of the transaction.
Beware of any attempt by anyone to paint a different transaction or a new transaction. There is no new transaction that God has given anyone to carry out. It is finished!
If Jesus said it is finished then it is finished. Don't allow anything that is not supposed to be existing to keep existing when Jesus had said it is finished.
What we need to do now is to ensure a good relationship with the Holy Spirit to ensure the efficacy of the finished transaction in our life.
