Where is your thirst?

Writer's picture: Ayoola BabalolaAyoola Babalola

Jesus said I thirst shortly before given up the ghost.

John 19:28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

The expression of Jesus here was a result of both physical and spiritual thirst. God left him at this point and he screamed Eli, Eli lama sabachtani meaning my God, my God why has thou forsaken me. The cry of Jesus was out of thirst. He could not stay without God's presence.

What is thirst?

Thirst is a strong desire for something.

How thirsty are you?

Fire will not come down except there is a thirsty heart. Jesus told the disciple to wait in Jerusalem for the promise of the father. What did they do? They started gathering together at the upper room praying together with thirst Act 1:12-14. They kept doing this daily until the day of Pentecost fully came.

Why were they praying daily waiting for the promise of the father? They were THIRSTY!

Pentecost came because some people were thirsty to receive.

Psalm 63:1 O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;

We need power, we need the fire of God to come down, we want to experience a new wave of glory. What do we need to receive? A THIRSTY HEART.

Where is your Thirst?

We need to be thirsty for God again. We are not experiencing God because we no longer thirst for him as we use to when we first gave our life to Christ.

When we will fast and pray all night.

When we will sing and worship God in tears for hours in His presence.

When we will sit with the word of God, studying for hours.

Why are we no longer thirsty?

1. We have become too familiar with God.

Saul was an example of one who became familiar with God and lost his thirst. Saul was formerly in reverence of Samuel, when Samuel is coming it is like God was visiting. He wait in great anticipation but when he became too familiar with God, when Samuel tarried incoming he decided to go ahead with the sacrifice that was to be done by Samuel. Familiarity kills thirst.

2. When service to God becomes monotonous. Thirst seize when you begin to see service to God as monotonous. This is also a product of familiarity. When Sunday service or workers meeting becomes monotonous it means the person has lost the thirst for God. David said I was happy when I was asked to come into the presence of God.

3. Cares of life- When you are burdened with the cares of this life you will no longer thirst for God again. You will be doing things only when you are pushed.

4. Too many activities- When you are engaged in too many activities it will wear out your mind and your body. Once your mind and body are worn out, you can't be focused to thirst for God.

We need to get back to God and rekindle our thirst to experience him as the time of old. We need to deal with the issues that is killing our thirst for God. Carry out a critical examination and set out to deal with the issues with the help of the Holy Spirit.

As we rekindle our thirst God will pour water, the Holy Spirit will express Himself in a manner you have never seen before.

Isaiah 44:3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:

John 7:37-38 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
